Constipation

Our colon does not degenerate but its movements gradually becomes slower over time. This is what we term as 'lazy' colon. The accumulated toxins in our body coupled with our reduced bowel movement and poor diet can cause constipation. For a normal human adult, the healthy frequency to the toilet for them to clear their bowels is 3 times in 2 days. If that is not the case, you can be classified to be suffering from mild to serious chronic constipation.

Constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or when the colon's muscle contractions are sluggish, resulting in our stool moving too slowly. As a result, we have difficulty expelling our stools and have hard and dry stools. When our colon accumulates toxin around its wall, our stools also becomes narrower. A lot of people may go toilet everyday but they don't really effectively expel completely their toxins. A healthy stool diameter should be at least the size of a Singapore 50 cents coin.

Although the reason is unknown, 1 in 3 women in Singapore suffers from constipation. Almost everyone suffers from constipation at some point of their life and a poor diet is typically the main cause. The common cause of constipation could be:

  • Lack of physical activity
  • Not enough fiber in diet
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Changes in life routine, pregnancy, aging or travelling
  • Under medications
  • Long-term usage of laxative
  • Ignoring the urge to expel bowels
  • Dehydration
  • Specific diseases such as stroke
  • Problems with colon, rectum or intestinal function

A lot of people think that by drinking a lot of water can help to completely flush out all the toxins that has accumulated in our body but the actual fact is NOT! You can try a small experiment yourself; after eating a plate of chicken rice, try to flush the empty plate with lots of water. The plate will still remain oily, no matter how long you flush! Our body is the same just by flushing our body with water just can't take away our toxins.

In most cases, one have to eat a well-balanced diet, high-fiber diet that includes beans, bran, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetable. Drink enough liquids, at least 2 liters of water per day. Exercise regularly to avoid constipation.
